Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell (Estados Unidos) y Shimon Sakaguchi (Jap\u00f3n), en reconocimiento a sus investigaciones fundamentales sobre c\u00f3mo el cuerpo humano regula el sistema inmunol\u00f3gico para evitar atacar sus propios tejidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Comit\u00e9 Nobel del Instituto Karolinska destac\u00f3 que los tres investigadores fueron distinguidos por sus \u00abdescubrimientos sobre la tolerancia comunitaria perif\u00e9rica\u00bb, un mecanismo clave que permite al sistema inmunol\u00f3gico identificar qu\u00e9 debe atacar y qu\u00e9 debe preservar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los hallazgos de Sakaguchi y su posterior desarrollo por parte de Brunkow y Ramsdell sentaron las bases de un nuevo campo de investigaci\u00f3n biom\u00e9dica: el estudio de las c\u00e9lulas T reguladoras (Tregs), esenciales para mantener la tolerancia inmunol\u00f3gica y prevenir enfermedades autoinmunes como la esclerosis m\u00faltiple, la artritis reumatoide o el lupus. Adem\u00e1s, han abierto nuevas v\u00edas para el tratamiento del c\u00e1ncer, al modular estas c\u00e9lulas para fortalecer la respuesta inmune contra los tumores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un avance con impacto global<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El descubrimiento de las c\u00e9lulas T reguladoras se remonta a la d\u00e9cada de 1990, cuando Sakaguchi identific\u00f3 un subtipo de linfocitos T que act\u00faan como \u00abguardianes\u00bb del sistema inmunol\u00f3gico. A\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, Brunkow y Ramsdell profundizaron en el papel del gen FOXP3, esencial para el desarrollo y funcionamiento de estas c\u00e9lulas.
